External Jump Logger.

If you have external links in your website like so:

Web Hosting: <a href="http://www.tv-science.co.uk/services/" target="_blank">TV Science Hosting</a>.

Then to log use of this external link, alter the link HTML as shown:

Web Hosting: <a href="/cgi-bin/jumper.pl?url=www.tv-science.co.uk/services/" target="_blank">TV Science Hosting</a>.

Visitors that follow this link will now have that action placed in your access logs
If the destination URL is a bad one (i.e. it no longer exists) then an ERROR: (1404) will be placed in your logs.

Note that http:// is correctly omitted from the second example.

Don't use this method to log internal jumps within your site or for other protocols (ftp:// etc.), they won't work. For internal links, log the arrival at the destination instead, see access logging.

This facility eases maintenance of jump sites in particular. Using this facility for the links will check the validity of each link each time it is used.
